Emerging Patterns in the Adoption of New-to-Market Oncology Biosimilars

Session Description:

As the cost of cancer care continues to rise, strategies to help reduce costs for health plans are needed. There are now several FDA-approved biosimilars for oncologic indications, with more in the pipeline to be approved in the next few years. These biosimilars can provide substantial cost savings when used effectively. Many health plans have successfully switched to lower-cost oncology biosimilars while continuing to maintain high quality care for members.

During this session, participants will learn strategies used by payers to promote oncology biosimilar use and address potential barriers to use. In addition, this session will provide potential cost savings implications for different stakeholders.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe emerging patterns of utilization for oncology biosimilars.
  • Identify at least two payer strategies to increase utilization of oncology biosimilars.
  • Describe the potential cost savings associated with oncology biosimilars for various stakeholders, including payers, providers, and patients.
  • Summarize financial savings realized by health plans who adopted an early pro-biosimilar strategy towards oncology biosimilars
