Effective prevention strategies for HIV infection are an important public health priority. The Trump administration has made increasing the use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) a focal point of its 10-year plan to end the HIV epidemic in the United States. Several clinical guidelines are available to provide guidance on detecting persons who may be at high risk for HIV infection, of which the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guideline is the most current. The USPSTF Grade A recommendation for PrEP will likely expand coverage to PrEP and its associated services as private insurers will be obliged to make PrEP available to patients without cost-sharing beginning in 2021.
This webinar will look at the updated USPSTF recommendations, the evidence behind those recommendations, review current strategies for PrEP management, and discuss how the updated guidelines may impact those strategies.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Explain the recent updates to the USPSTF HIV PrEP guidelines.
2. Describe how published evidence and other guideline recommendations (e.g., CDC, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)) compare to the USPSTF PrEP guidelines.
3. Review the effect of utilization management strategies on patient outcomes and access to PrEP treatments.
4. Discuss how the 2019 USPSTF HIV PrEP guideline update will impact coverage and utilization management strategies
