Over the last several years, payers have increased their focus on the management of rare diseases. When compared to 2008, the number of agents granted orphan drug designation has more than tripled in 2020. While these agents represent scientific breakthroughs and significant medical progress, the cost of these treatments may also require close monitoring of the pipeline, assessment of potential budget impact and appropriate managed care strategies to ensure safe and appropriate use in patients.
This session will provide a current landscape of rare disease management and a summary of new treatments likely to be available for rare diseases. In addition, this session will demonstrate the role of clinical programs to manage the utilization of rare disease treatments and explore proposed models to manage the costs related to rare disease therapies
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Summarize the current landscape and anticipated future trends with rare disease therapies.
- Identify at least three treatment options for rare disease currently in the pipeline and the potential impact on the specific disease.
- Identify at least two challenges payers face when managing rare diseases.
- Discuss at least two management opportunities and their potential impact on patient outcomes and spend.
