Utilization management practices are applied to medications in many therapeutic areas, but present unique challenges with digital therapeutics (DTx) and digital health tools. These practices play an important role in optimizing and driving utilization patterns towards clinically- and cost-effective products, but the application of inappropriate exclusions can negatively affect the overall health care spend. Digital therapeutics is a nascent field, and many questions exist on what part they play in overall treatment. Furthermore, the regulatory approval process for DTx is not well understood by plan sponsors, which may result in failing to optimize clinical and financial outcomes by plans.
This session will provide clarification on how rebates, comparative effectiveness research, and new-to-market block plan designs influence decision makers determining which medications, DTx, and health technology tools are ultimately excluded from formularies.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Evaluate how exclusionary practices play an important role in driving utilization patterns towards clinically and cost-effective medications, digital therapeutics, and health technology.
- Analyze opportunities and challenges plan sponsors and payers face in determining how digital therapeutics and health technology tools are incorporated or excluded from formularies.
- Apply best practices, including comparative effectiveness research and pharmacoeconomic and rebate analyses, to ensure clinical and financial outcomes for all relevant stakeholders.
