Activity Description:

Innovative approaches to developing value-based contracts in the market need to be multi-faceted.  Value-based contracting requires measuring and assessing “value” as defined by patients, providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacy benefit managers, and health plans.  This session will review one health plan’s approach to value-based contracting that incorporates comprehensive clinical services. The concept of value will be explored, including expanding the definition beyond traditional measures assessed in most value-based contracts. This in-depth look will dive into formulary management, benefit design changes, pharmacy care management programs, and physician gain/risk-sharing program incorporation.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe an approach to value-based contracting, including a more holistic view of value as defined by multiple stakeholders.
  2. Discuss the concepts, processes, and measures used in developing recent value-based contracts.
  3. Explain how clinical programs can support a comprehensive strategy for value-based contracting.
