Value—a word of great promise and ambiguity—continues to chisel and sculpt the national health care system at large. Whether through benefit design, provider reimbursement, pharmaceutical pricing and contracts, patient access and incentives, drug approvals, coverage issues, or regulatory issues, value continues to carve different tracks through health care. While value offers great promise, there are unintended risks. In the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy editorial, “Changing the Way We Pay for Health Care: Is Value the New Plastic?” Dr. Robert P. Navarro steps back to piece together the bigger picture and contemplates our odyssey through value. Join this high-level session to review the transformation and incorporation of value across the health care spectrum, as we know it today. To access Dr. Navarro’s article, please visit www.jmcp.org.
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Review the impact and incorporation of “value” across the health care distribution system, including on patients, providers, managed care, pharmaceutical industry, and federal agencies.
- Discuss the objectives, outcomes, and unintended consequences of the overall shift to a value-based health system.
- Summarize new approaches pharmaceutical companies are taking as part of building their value strategies to support better patient access to innovative pharmaceuticals.
